Before starting bottle feeding, it is recommended to breastfeed for at least six to eight weeks and only then introduce bottle feeding. You can discuss this with your health care professional or lactation consultant, as they will be able to give you proper advice on when would be the best time to start bottle feeding, as it usually depends on your individual situation. It is equally important to feel confident that the baby will not reject the breast after starting occasional bottle feeding, so that the child does not become stressed by constantly changing the bottle to the breast. Extensive research has shown that a baby's sucking style is very different from an adult's and involves three main steps. These are the initial sucking, peristaltic tongue movement (when your baby's tongue moves in a wavy motion) and swallowing. It is very important for the baby to be able to perform the peristaltic movement of the tongue, as this promotes the natural development of the mouth and jaw.
